Turn structure and turn taking: Pursuing progressivity in EFL talk.

This paper reported the results of a longitudinal study of the development of interactional competence of a Japanese EFL student in a university in Japan. The results pointed to a gradual emergence of an orientation to turn structure and the need for systematic use of language to negotiate turn transition in a naturalistic manner.

This presentation outlined the interactional architecture of three genres of questions: Transactional, display and interactional and suggested that the preponderance of the first two genres in language teaching leaves learners ill-equipped to identify and respond to interactional questions.

This presentation detailed various speech acts that are carried out by questions and suggested that the transactional and display formats are most familiar to learners, and that interactional questions are generally not the subject of classroom instruction, with concomitant effects for student speaking.

This presentation highlighted the centrality of speaking in second/ foreign language learning, focusing specifically on the genre of conversation. The language that is particular to conversation was outlined and teaching materials and methodology were described.

When Words Don't Match: Concept Checking.

This presentation examined the pitfalls of obscurity, circularity, translation and labeling as pertain to L2 language instruction and detailed a classroom methodology that circumvents these issues when explaining vocabulary and grammar to L2 learners. The methodology involves asking a series of binary or multiple-choice questions that explicate the item in a systematic way.

Small Talk is Big Talk: Teaching Phatic Communication

This presentation sought to outline the difference between transactional talk and talk based on creating and maintaining social bonds, i.e. phatic communication. It was suggested that phatic communication is often sidelined in the language classroom and that learners should be oriented to the ways in which phatic communication is performed by interactants.

This paper detailed the main obstacles to clear explanation of grammar and lexis in an L2 teaching context, namely, obscurity, circularity and mistranslation and then went on to outline the practice of concept checking questions that can be used in the classroom, illustrating with some common items of lexis and grammar from English.
